IACS UR E26
IACS Unified Requirement E26 addresses the cyber resilience of ships, including the integration of information technology and operational technology systems. It sets requirements across design, construction, commissioning and operation. Applicability depends on the relevant revision, construction contract date and classification society. It is a ship-level requirement, not a certification automatically supplied by cybersecurity software.
LEO satellite
A low Earth orbit satellite travels relatively close to Earth, generally below 2,000 kilometres altitude. Communications constellations use multiple moving satellites to provide connectivity as coverage passes between them. Their shorter signal path can reduce propagation delay compared with geostationary satellites, while practical maritime performance also depends on terminals, coverage and service conditions.
Safety Management System
A Safety Management System is the structured, documented system through which a shipping company implements its safety and environmental protection policy under the ISM Code. It defines responsibilities, procedures and reporting arrangements. Maritime cyber risks should be addressed within the relevant management processes; purchasing an ICT service does not replace the company’s responsibilities.
SD-WAN
SD-WAN means software-defined wide area networking. It uses software policies to manage traffic across available network connections, such as satellite and cellular links. For a vessel, those policies can assign application priorities and select paths according to configured conditions. SD-WAN does not itself provide satellite coverage or guarantee uninterrupted sessions.
VSAT
VSAT means very small aperture terminal: a satellite communications terminal with a relatively small antenna. Maritime VSAT systems connect vessels to satellite networks using equipment designed for a moving platform. Available capacity, coverage and performance depend on the satellite service, antenna, operating area and selected airtime plan.
